  • Venue: Antofagasta, Chile
  • Dates: 7 – 9 September 2011

About two years ago, the mining industry and the entire world faced a crisis that hit severely the economy of many countries. This crisis lasted for a non negligible period of time during 2008 and 2009. Fortunately, many countries began its recovery and during 2010 this process started to consolidate. Now, it is expected that 2011 will be the year that will represent the definitive consolidation of economic growth for many countries in the region after facing the aforementioned world crisis. The mining industry is not an exception to this growth and it is backing it by launching large projects that consider considerable investment, which will require the optimisation of its asset management.

Mine Equipment Maintenance is vital for effective mining operations, becoming an essential and strategic activity that generates a great impact for which it has received a relevant role in each stage of mining business. Maintenance is far too important to be considered in isolation. The definition of solid, coherent, integrated-to-the-main-market strategies that allow the generation of maintenance models and organisational structures with an important weighting, is fundamental to succeed in the essential function of consistently delivering reliable production equipment, which allows obtaining the expected productive capabilities and best ensures a profitable operation in the challenging environment that mining operations face.

In parallel to the industrial development in relation to mine maintenance, great efforts have been carried out by professionals aiming at the consolidation and/or generation of new basic and applied knowledge in this area. These efforts lead to improvements in quality and efficiency of mining operations, including the generation of new technologies, practices, and progress in their engineering aspects.

As part of these efforts, I am pleased to invite you to be part of this new challenge and to participate in the 6th INTERNATIONAL MINE EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE MEETING – MANTEMIN 2011, to be held from 7 to 9 September 2011 at the Enjoy Hotel in Antofagasta, Chile. MANTEMIN 2011 is organised by Gecamin Ltd and has the institutional support of Consejo Minero de Chile, Sonami Chile and Ibram (Brazil).

This Meeting will provide a unique opportunity for all professionals - engineers, researchers, technical consultants and suppliers, - to analyse and discuss the recent progress in the field of Mine Maintenance in several areas of interest, which will allow enriching our vision, widening our knowledge y strengthening our collaboration networks. During the meeting we will discuss the challenges we face today, and current methods, as well as methods under study, to make mine equipment maintenance more effective.

This meeting should be of interest to all professionals involved in the mine equipment maintenance activity, including general managers, mine maintenance managers, superintendents, mine maintenance engineers, reliability engineers, mechanical, electrical, electronic and industrial engineers, operations managers, contractors, technology developers, researchers, and maintenance service providers.

I wish to reiterate my invitation for you to be part of this new challenge and to participate in Mantemin 2011. I cordially invite you to contribute and participate by presenting a paper, attending the conference and sharing your experience with the rest of the industry.

I look forward to welcoming you in Antofagasta for Mantemin 2011.

Organizers

C-MORE, Centre for Maintenance Optimization and Reliability Engineering

The Centre for Maintenance Optimization and Reliability Engineering is part of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto.

C-MORE's research is driven by close interactions with industry, in particular with MORE consortium members and with researchers at universities world-wide. Their focus is on real-world research in engineering asset management in the areas of condition-based maintenance, spares management, protective devices, maintenance and repair contracts, and failure-finding intervals. These strong industry connections not only benefit the companies they work with, but also their graduate students, who find work in maintenance divisions of industry leaders after graduation.

C-MORE applies its research with prototype software tools that obtain valuable information from data in corporate databases. Two of these tools are now commercially available through the Ontario-based C-MORE spin-off company OMDEC, and through industry leader and innovator in asset reliability solutions Ivara.

Educational programs at C-MORE are based on its long history of application-based research in the field of maintenance management and its connections to leading practitioners and consultants in the field. The objective of the programs is to combine high quality content delivered by leading instructors with the academic rigour of the University of Toronto. These programs are designed to provide practitioners with first-hand knowledge to make them more effective in their workplaces in a short period of time through an intensive, interactive training environment.

C-MORE is also the driving force behind IMEC: the Asset Management Conference, which brings together leaders in the global maintenance field. IMEC is a place for participants to meet with colleagues and establish new contacts from a select group of internationally-recognized leaders in maintenance excellence.

Gecamin
Advancing professional excellence in the mining industry for over 10 years

Gecamin is a private, Chilean company created in 1998 that annually organises international technical events with the aim of informing and inspiring mining industry professionals, fostering the exchange of information, and sharing best practices and new technologies applied in mining. The goal of each conference is to bring together engineers, scientists, researchers, managers and operators to enable a focused discussion on the latest developments and innovations with the ultimate purpose of establishing interdisciplinary networks of research and knowledge exchange.

Through these conferences and training programmes Gecamin seeks to help the industry to openly address its most pressing concerns and find more sustainable solutions.

Gecamin organises seminars in partnership with institutions of strong technical excellence in mining such as the Universidad de Chile, the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, the Universidad de Concepción, Chile, the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, Chile, The University of Western Australia and The University of Queensland, Australia, among others.

In 12 years of operation, more than 12,000 professionals have attended our events and have been trained in areas of paramount importance to the mining industry. These areas include the following: Geology, Mining Unit Operations, Mine Planning, Mineral Processing, Hydrometallurgy, Paste and Thickened Tailings, Mine and Plant Maintenance, Automation and Control, Water and Energy Management in Mining, Mine Closure, Environmental and Social Impacts Assessment.

Each event organised by Gecamin features a great diversity of technical papers presenting case studies, applications as well as theoretical research and scientific findings. Every conference is documented by the proceedings containing carefully selected peer reviewed papers. Prominent industry experts and academics bring their knowledge and experience to our events ensuring high standards of the proceedings and the technical programmes.

The next few years are expected to bring a much more positive economic outlook, allowing mining companies worldwide to activate or reconsider alternatives for greenfield and brownfield projects. Sustainability, water in mining and efficient energy use will remain the key focus areas throughout the major part of the industry. For this reason, Gecamin believes it is of great importance to share experiences and discuss alternatives and opportunities for improving operational processes and best practices with colleagues from around the world.
